Abstract

Aims: This study provides a comprehensive review of existing literature on the determinants of adolescent smoking behavior, identifying key factors contributing to smoking initiation and continuation among this population. Methods: A systematic search was conducted using PubMed, ScienceDirect, and ProQuest databases. Boolean operators (OR, AND, NOT) were applied with keywords related to adolescent smoking and its determinants. The review included articles published in English between 2011 and 2021. Screening by title, abstract, and full text ensured relevance to study objectives. Inclusion criteria focused on adolescents and factors influencing smoking behavior. Findings: Of 876 articles initially screened, 17 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed through qualitative synthesis. The review identified demographic, environmental, psychological, and economic factors as key determinants of adolescent smoking. Smoking initiation is influenced by age, gender, education, academic performance, and parental characteristics, while persistence is shaped by early initiation, socioeconomic conditions, and financial independence. Psychological conditions, such as stress and anxiety, and financial factors, like personal income, were significant contributors to smoking behavior. Conclusion: The findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions during adolescence, focusing on educational achievements, family engagement, and economic status to curb smoking initiation and persistence. A multifaceted approach is essential, including school-based prevention programs, family-centered interventions, and comprehensive regulatory measures addressing individual and structural factors. Future research should evaluate the long-term impacts of these interventions and explore evolving patterns of adolescent smoking behavior in diverse contexts.
